: Nails It: The Onion | Nation In Love With Girl From Record Store. It's always fun to see how stereotypical my own life is.

: Chillout: Chilledbeats now streams a station in mp3PRO. This gives you better soundquality at reasonable bitrates. You'll need a mp3PRO-enabled player like Musicmatch Jukebox to take advantage of it.
: Site News: I cleaned up the right menu. It should be much nicer now. I also added a couple sites, including the New Music Tipsheet. Dave W. found this amazing resource that lists all new releases along with UPC codes. Happy Thanksgiving!

: But, Can She Cook?: An article in Wired, The Love Machine, describes an experiment to see if having an attractive virtual companion on your desktop that converses with you and asks you about exercising can get you to work out more. Sounds a lot like a "VHost" from Oddcast. I am both creeped out, and oddly hopeful that something like this could work. My primary use would be to use the hot virtual chick to get people to buy music. Sinister? Yes.

: Christmas Chillout: hOMe For the Holidays is a downtempo/house holiday album! Ye gods, this Christmas music thing has just gone too far! Still, buying the MP3s from Audio Lunchbox is pretty cheap. I recommend the tracks "Psycho Jingle Funk" and "Winter Wonderland".
: Is It Possible? CProject: The Best 100 Songs Ever I don't know where this is going, but I like the list they have going so far, so I will keep an eye on it. Please submit if you have the time.
: But, How Did the Salmon Feel? Crowe's Snack Attack leads me to want to create t-shirts with that slogan on CafePress.
: Very Cool: Warp Records, home to ASC favorite bands like !!! and Plaid (and also overrated knobtwiddler, Aphex Twin) will be seeling its catalog in MP3 format from Bleep.com. As they put it: "In December 2003, Warp will make our entire back catalogue and all new releases available as high quality, pay-per-track MP3 downloads. " You know I will be picking up something.

: They're Also Good For Duelling: The NYT review of Nelly Furtado's Folklore carries a classic line: "Between Ms. Furtado and the Dixie Chicks, banjo is becoming a new signal of female empowerment.". I hope that I like this CD.
: Unhappy Jack?: Your Cheatin' Cart - The problem with Hummer's new ad. By Seth Stevenson An article on Slate sums up my feelings on the brilliant Hummer ad. And, it is brilliant.
: Change for the Better? This memo just went out to all 91X DJs from the PD.

Subject: talking over intros

effective immediately, i want to have NO talk over intros. let's see what it sounds like.

this is coming back from listeners as a big turn-off and i want to see what it sounds like here. don't mention that we're now not talking over songs...just don't talk over songs anymore.

TFN.

see ya

: Another One Bites The Dust: One of the better ska sites out there has gone away. Goodbye Southernska. They turned me on to a number of new groups and kept me up to date on a few things. But, it was too much work for one guy. Oh well, move along.

: What's Your Sign?: To those "free-spirits" who are described in Feel Free to Jack Into My IPod I have a very important message: Feel Free to Bite Into My Ass! Typical Apple ditz-drones... the Walkman's headphone jack has been around for 20 years, but it wasn't cool to share then? Oh right, this is because the iPod is so expensive, that you can assume anyone who owns one must be of the appropriate class? I suppose I should embrace it because it is a Good Idea. I'm way too shy to ever try it myself, so I guess that means I'm just bitter.

: Soul Child: I highly, highly recommend that you check out Joss Stone on MTV's You Hear It First. Play the video feature. She is my pick to break.

: Bummer: Pretty Girls' Van Swiped. Property is theft, but this sucks. You can donate to their Equipment Fund at their Web site.

: You Gots To Chill: Death In Vegas put together latest 'Back To Mine' compilation - NME.COM. The best chillout series ever. 'Nuff said.

: Wrong Side of the Pond: Dammit!! A new album from Lamb - UK only!! Between Darkness & Wonder. I love Lamb and want to get this. (Update 04:51:23 PM: Weblisten didn't have it, so I just ordered the CD from CDQuest. I'm obsessive like that.) P.S. I found out about this new CD because of hearing a cut on KCRW last night.
: Enter to Win: From the folks that brought you the chance to win free CDs for life comes the Djangos contest to win a DVD a month for 2004. Good luck! (I can't believe I didn't win the CDs... I had such a good feeling about that.)

: Sad State of Affairs: Even if this is satire, it's amazingly depressing because it is so plausible. And, I don't think it's satire. Wired News: ITunes Undermines Social Security. People need to get comfortable with themselves and stop judging/comparing/refining/friendstering other people. THis story really, really bugs me.
: Pick a Winner: Doug passed along this Billboard report about OutKast Seeking Fans' Help for Next Singles. Awesome! Vote early, vote often.

: You Are the Commercial: Create your own Coldplay "megacard".
: Viral Lawyering: Oops!!! Our bad.... 91X gets new blink-182 and promotes it. Record label lawyers feel an itch to justify their arrogant and incestuous existence for another week. This e-mail results. Curiously, the lawyer ends her missive with "Very truly yours," -- sounds like transferral of copyright to me!

: Minneapolis to SD, One Way: There are some Dismemberment Plan concerts streaming from DCN -- I checked out the one listed as "First Avenue on 11.18.2002" in Minneapolis .. when I played it, it was actually their 2nd to last show at the Casbah in San Diego! I was at this show, so it was fun to relive it. Here's the link if you're interested. They play a couple "new" songs -- e.g. "Born in 72" that never made it to any album. In fact, I wrote a 3-page experience review after that show - part of the original A Solid Call which is now lost forever.

: Trim The Fat: Sony Considers Lower CD Prices With Fewer Tracks Per Album. I would love this idea, but wouldn't margins suffer? The costs for producing a CD would not decrease significantly with fewer tracks. Marketing and promotion costs would stay constant, packaging and distro stay constant. The producer probably will not take much less.. so now you're left with studio time... a small part of the equation. Why not just less money for the same amount of content? Seems Sony is always trying to nickel and dime itself to death.

P.S. I think the PSP looks goofy. I'll stick with my GBA.

: Scratch Pickles?: I saw this in RAIN: 'Brain itch' keeps songs in the head -- a study about catchy tunes and why they stick in your head. The bit at the end makes me wonder if you couldn't try making a hit by using an melody that omits the note that brings it to resolution.

: Rock Divorce, Part II: From MTV: EVANESCENCE GUITARIST BAILS ON BAND IN EUROPE

According to the band's manager, Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody - also co-founder of the group with singer Amy Lee - packed up and flew home on the morning of October 24th before a show in Berlin. No reason was given for his departure.

Moody's future with Evanescence is unclear, their manager said, and the band has continued its tour with second guitarist John LeCompt handling all six-string duties.

: Rock Divorce: Alien Ant Farm loses their guitarist. The new album isn't doing much anyway -- though some of the songs are damn catchy -- especially the one that always plays on the NHL 2004 video game.
: Boy In Da Corner: Greg passed this along: Teen Rapper Dizzee Rascal Coming to North America. Looks like my boy DR will get a North American release -- which will will sell about 27 copies. I heard him and Roll Deep on the Basement Jaxx record and also on The Streets All Got Our Runnins EP. He's got the game figured out for now, but how will he evolve? What he's doing now will get old real fast and at 23 where will he be? If he's got real skills, he will adapt and create something new -- but that talent's rare. I say enjoy it while it lasts. I do. Fix up, look sharp!
